Did you know that currently as much as 59.9% of the cost of a bottle of distilled spirits (whisky, vodka, gin, etc.) is tax?  Current legislature proposes upwards of a 229% tax hike on distilled spirits.  This also includes, beer, wine, and soft drinks.  Don’t let the government control your freedoms by limiting the amount you can spend.  This will hurt the spirits industry and hospitality industry if it passes!  Make your voice count!

I want you to take a look at: Axe Taxes Not Jobs today!

I received this email from Diageo North America just the other day and thought it was a very informative.  I didn’t realize that the proposed tax on sugary drinks, etc., would also include alcoholic beverages.  Social activism or politics is not what this blog is about, but I had to mention this because it affects so many of us cocktail enthusiasts, bartenders, spirit reps, and spirit companies out there…not to mention the consumer, which ultimately is everyone’s bread and butter, so to speak.

I encourage you to visit the site, which gives you an opportunity to communicate your opinions about this bill to your state representatives and senators in Washington, D.C., sign up to stay posted through emails, and repost the info on your social networking site–Twitter, Facebook, and so forth.  One useful tool on the site gives you the ability to see, by state, what percentage of the cost of liquor, beer and wise is tax.  Very eye-opening!

Thanks all for indulging me.  Stay informed.  Cheers!
